Every piece can die in chess. It’s a war game, that’s the whole point.
As long as the King stands, though, the “war” goes on. So while it’s not a perfect metaphor, yes, the King is endgame.
His death ends the game.
I don’t know whether this was brought on by the post I reblogged or by events in the show but if it’s the latter, I don’t think that comment about checkmate was meant to signify Derek’s impending death.
I took it as Nogitsune!Stiles being one move away from winning the war.
The king is a piece who’s role changes dramatically in ‘endgame’. Yes, it can die, EVERY piece can be taken off the board (die), but if the King dies, the game ends. But there’s a phase of chess when most of the pieces have been taken off the board. This is called ‘endgame’.
However, it is also a piece that goes from being relatively weak (to be defended rather than a strong offensive piece) to being one of the strongest pieces in the game in ‘Endgame’. It moves to the center of the board and becomes a strong offensive piece. It’s more than ‘something that can die’, it is literally the most important piece of the game, and if the game lasts long enough, becomes among the strongest.
Ohhh, I was not aware of this; very interesting!
BTW, you may also be interested to know that pawns ARE disposable, but even a pawn can take out a King or Queen AND, if a pawn makes it to the other side of the board, it can become the piece of the player’s choice (except King and, well, who’d make it a pawn again?). The choice of piece to ‘promote’ it to is so frequent that the process is called ‘Queening’.
Don’t ignore the pawns…
Now THAT I did know! I love chess - my dad and I play it sometimes - but I only know about certain moves/rules. Not enough of a chess geek to know it all. :(
yoinking from Wiki
In chess, the king (♔, ♚) is the most important piece. The object of the game is to trap the opponent’s king so that its escape is not possible (checkmate). If a player’s king is threatened with capture, it is said to be in check, and the player must remove the threat of capture on the next move. If this cannot be done, the king is said to be in checkmate. Although the king is the most important piece, it is usually the weakest piece in the game until a later phase, the endgame.
okay, so what’s the endgame phase?
In chess and chess-like games, the endgame (or end game or ending) is the stage of the game when there are few pieces left on the board.
The line between middlegame and endgame is often not clear, and may occur gradually or with the quick exchange of a few pairs of pieces. The endgame, however, tends to have different characteristics from the middlegame, and the players have correspondingly different strategic concerns. In particular, pawns become more important as endgames often revolve around attempting to promote a pawn by advancing it to the eighth rank.
The king, which has to be protected in the middlegame owing to the threat of checkmate, becomes a strong piece in the endgame. It can be brought to the center of the board and be a useful attacking piece.
that Scott’s going to become a proper True Alpha in the end? like, full complete control and all? that more pieces are going to fall (maybe Aidan and Ethan? and the MCD?) Derek’s going to play a big role in the end?
i guess the question is what kind of endgame we’re gonna be seeing…
hey wait a minute. where was Lydia on the board?! i didnt see her! 8V AND WHAT IS KATE DOING THERE ANYWAYS? is supposed to be a hint that Allison is still dealing with her nightmares from the start of 3b?
why isn’t KIRA there too? does the nogitsune not consider her a ‘player’ on the board? or is unaware of her? but it cant NOT be aware of her… unless it considers Kira’s mom the bigger threat. which is more plausible because it knows what Stiles knows and Stiles knows that Kira is untrained at the whole kitsune thing 8/a
is it possible the people we don’t see on the board are the ones who’re gonna be the game changers?
"Let me be your everlasting light"
Am i late for the Derek is the king party? Ok so I got really excited with that for many obvious reasons but I took my time to do something serious.
Derek is surrounded with wolfsbane
(yes that’s wolfsbane)because as in chess the king can move very little if im not wrong, just like a werewolf with wolfsbane in their system.
Everlasting light because Derek wants to be “the shepherd" and i really like that song. Oh, and purple is royalty, so the color scheme is around that. :)
